414 POUND THRESHER WINS 36th ANNUAL
FREEPORT HUDSON ANGLERS SHARK TOURNAMENT

 

First-place team takes home $16,830 in cash

JUNE 21, 2008, Freeport, NY A 414-pound Thresher shark caught by Angler Thomas Cook on the My Three Suds has won the 36th Annual Freeport Hudson Anglers Shark Tournament. Capt. Andrew Cook and his crew Thomas Cook, Chris Cook, Larry McGeevy, Doug Mendez and Doug Kell were awarded $16,830 for 1st. place. The Thresher was one of about 31 sharks weighed in at the Town of Hempstead Guy Lombardo Marina this evening at the Tournament’s close. Other prize-winning fish included:

  • Second place with $39,940 in cash and Calcutta went to Capt. Mike Rigletti and the rest of the crew on the Current Sea for a 303-pound Mako Shark
  • Third place with $29,508 in cash and in Calcutta went to Capt. Chris Carthew and the rest of the crew on the My Cherie II for a 288-pound Thresher Shark
  • Fourth place with $54,597 in cash and in Calcutta went to Capt. Peter Rao and the rest of the crew on the Lady Jid for a 270-pound Mako Shark.
  • Fifth place with $1,224 in cash went to Capt. John Bowman and the rest of the crew on the Ring Leader for a 239-pound Thresher Shark.
  • There were three tagging awards of over $600 each awarded and a total of 57-tagged sharks.

A total of 180 fishing teams participated in this year’s tournament, one of the oldest and largest shark-fishing tournaments on Long Island. Over $140,000 was given out in prize and Calcutta.
