In 1966 a group of men formed the "Hudson Point Fishing Club" with a total of 16 members. The purpose for which the organization had been formed was to interest and encourage members in all kinds of sport fishing; to support all movements and legislation intended to assist in the propagation of salt water fish; to use all legislative methods to protect the interest of rod and reel fisherman; to encourage good fellowship and sportsmanship; and to aid in the formulation and establishment of sound policies and practices designed to conserve, restore, protect and safely regulate the natural resources of our continent.

In 1975 the first charter of the Hudson Anglers Inc. was given and in 1988 the charter was revised to be known as the Freeport Hudson Anglers, Inc.

A partial listing of past presidents were, Ed Arnold, it's first president, Mitch Eisenberg , Joe Long , Dom Castonova , Paul Bardenhagen, Paul Murray, Harvey Smith, Paul Giangreco, Herb Stevenson, Emmet Dowd, Merv Bedell , David Wygoda, George Steininger and the current President, Bill Heath.

The 2002 membership stands at 85 plus twelve honorary members. The membership consists of men of different backgrounds and professions with fishing being a common interest. In order to become a member one must be sponsored and go through an interview and vote by the membership.

In 1972 the Club started an Annual Shark Tournament and on June 21, 2008, will be holding their 36th Annual Shark Tournament. Through, and thanks to, the support of the town of Hempstead, the Village of Freeport, our new sponsor, Boater's World and the numerous retailers and manufacturers, the Tournament has grown to be the biggest shark tournament in the world. The participating boats varied in size from 21 feet to 62 feet with everyone having an equal chance of winning a part of the $46,500.00, in prize money. Additionally, there was over $150,000.00, in gift certificates and products distributed.

The Tournament has several purposes and beneficiaries. Purposes include: promoting sport fishing by rod and reel, good fellowship and competition, conservation through a minimum weight of 150 pounds for eligible fish which was established some 18 years ago, and a Tag and Release Tournament within the Tournament which was established ten years ago. As to the beneficiaries, they are: the Village of Freeport which promotes itself as a major fishing center in the Northeast; the spectators who get some of the catch that is brought in and prepared by the Club; and charitable organizations such as the Interfaith Nutritional Network (INN) which receive several hundred pounds of fish all prepared from the catch.

Other activities and functions held by the Club include monthly General Membership Meetings on every second Thursday of the month in addition to the Executive Board Meeting held the last Thursday of each month.

During the year the membership competes against various other Clubs through tournaments for various species of fish such as flounder, fluke, bluefish, blackfish, weakfish and shark, etc. in addition to intra-club tournaments and yearly derbies. Each March the Club holds an Annual Awards Dinner-Dance and each August a Club barbecue for the members and their families.

The Club is a member of the N.Y. Sports Fishing Federation (NYSFF), the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), and holds seats on the Board and Council respectively, in addition to membership in IGFA and Boat US.
