History of the
Freeport Hudson Anglers
In 1966 a group of men formed the "Hudson Point Fishing Club" with a total of 16 members. The purposes for which the organization had been formed are as follows:
Facilitate members’ interest and participation in all kinds of sports fishing; |
Support all movements and legislation intended to assist in the propagation of salt water fish; |
Use all legislative methods to protect the interest of rod and reel fisherman; |
Encourage good fellowship and sportsmanship; |
Aid in the formulation and establishment of sound policies and practices designed to conserve, restore, protect and safely regulate the natural resources of our continent. |
In 1975, the first charter of the Hudson Anglers Inc. was granted. Subsequently, in 1988, the charter was revised to be known as the Freeport Hudson Anglers, Inc. The membership consists of people of different backgrounds and professions with fishing being a common interest. In order to become a member one must be sponsored and go through an interview process and be voted in the membership. Additionally, many members are avid sportsmen with interests in other outdoor activities. The club holds its monthly General Membership Meetings on every second Thursday of the month. The Executive Board Meeting is held the last Tuesday of each month.

In 1972 the Club started an Annual Shark Tournament. The tournament has grown to be the largest and successful shark tournaments in the world. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the town of Hempstead, the Village of Freeport and the numerous retailers and manufacturers. Our tournament’s continued success would not have been possible without their support. The Tournament has several purposes and beneficiaries which include:
Promoting sport fishing by rod and reel, |
Good fellowship and competition: |
Conservation through a minimum weight of 175 pounds for eligible fish: |
Tag and Release Tournament within the Tournament which was established ten years ago. |
As to the beneficiaries of the tournament, they include the Village of Freeport, which promotes itself as a major fishing center in the Northeast; the spectators who receive some of the catch that is brought in and prepared by the clubs’ members; and charitable organizations which receive the bulk of fish which is prepared from the catch.
During the year the membership competes against various other clubs through tournaments for various species of fish such as flounder, fluke, bluefish, blackfish, weakfish and shark, etc. In addition to intra-club tournaments and yearly derbies, each March, the Freeport Hudson Anglers holds their Annual Awards Dinner-Dance. In August, a Club barbecue for the members and their families is held.
The Club is a member of the N.Y. Sports Fishing Federation (NYSFF), the Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA), and holds seats on the Board and Council respectively, as well as membership in IGFA. |
